The death of a loved one can be a difficult time, and the financial burden of a funeral can be overwhelming. If you are in receipt of certain benefits, you may be eligible to claim a Funeral Expense Payment to help with the cost of the funeral.


The benefits that qualify you for a Funeral Expense Payment include:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit
  • The disability or severe disability element of Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest Loan Payments

Amount of Payment:

The amount of the Funeral Expense Payment depends on the benefits you receive and the circumstances of the funeral. The maximum payment is £1,000.

How to Claim:

You must apply for a Funeral Expense Payment within six months of the funeral. You can apply online or by post. The application form is available on the GOV.UK website:
